Most companies will be liable for state unemployment if they have at least one employee in each of any 20 different weeks in a calendar year or pay $1,000 in wages in a calendar year. You can check if you are liable and register with the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency online. You will receive their Unemployment (UIA) Employer Account Number in 3 days after completing the online registration. This process can take up to 30 days if registration is completed by mail. The Unemployment rate for new employers in Michigan is 2.7%. In addition, you must include your MI Obligation Assessment Rate when entering this into OnPay (look on the rate notice you received from the agency).
