For New Alabama Businesses: Please follow the steps below to register your business with the Alabama Department of Revenue. Unless these steps are followed in their entirety, OnPay will be unable to file and pay your Alabama Department of Revenue taxes.
For Existing Alabama Businesses: If you already have access to the Alabama Department of Revenue website, and have a withholding tax ID number, please STOP, and simply provide us with the data requested in step 13 of this document. If you have access to the Alabama Department of Revenue website but do not have a withholding tax ID, please log into your Alabama Department of Revenue account and apply for access to a withholding ID. If you have any questions, please call the Alabama Department of Revenue directly at 334-242-1300.
Step 1: Please CLICK HERE to access the begin registration link.
Step 2: Click the "CLICK HERE TO REGISTER ONLINE" link to begin the process.
Step 3: Click the BUSINESS oval, then click "Obtain a New Tax Account Number"
Step 4: Choose "All Other Account Types" from the first drop-down menu, choose "No" in the second drop-down menu. Once complete, click "Next".
Step 5: Enter your entity information. Once complete, click "Next".
**You must have already registered with the Alabama Secretary of State. For more information on registering with the Secretary of State please call 334-242-5324.
Step 6: Enter your contact and officer information. Once complete, click "Next".
Note, the information may be different than that listed below depending on your type of business entity.
Step 7: Choose "Add an Account" then choose "Withholding Tax" from the first drop-down, enter the date you hired your first employee in the second drop-down, then choose your state and county. When done, click "Next".
Step 8: Choose "Click here to search for your NAICS-code".
Step 9: Type in a keyword that most closely matches your industry and chooses the code that best represents your company. Once complete, choose "OK".
Step 10: Verify that the NAICS Code shown is correct. Click "Next" to continue.
Step 11: You may add an additional address where you wish to receive correspondence. If you do not wish to add any additional addresses, please click "Next" to move on to the next step.
Step 12: Your registration is not complete until you click the "Submit" button as shown below. Once you click submit, it will take 3-5 business days for you to receive your tax ID number in the mail.
Step 13: You will receive a letter in the mail that will display the following information:
- Alabama Withholding Tax Account Number
- E-File Sign-On ID
- E-File Access Code
We need a copy of this letter or the information listed above emailed to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please also log into OnPay and enter the tax ID number by clicking Settings > Payroll Taxes > Alabama > and enter the ID in the Withholding Tax ID field.
If you have already received an email from OnPay requesting this information, please simply reply back to that email with the letter, and log into your account to enter the ID using the steps listed in the previous paragraph.
